ART 7960 MFA Studio Thesis (grad) -- Content will vary as per the MFA candidate’s topic. Regardless of topic, the MFA in Graphic Design’s thesis is identified in the following way. The thesis consists of two components: Visual and Written. How the thesis is presented can be decided by the student depending on audience and intention in consultation with their committee. Whichever final format the research takes, it needs to be submitted in TAD (Thesis and Dissertation) format to the committee.
ART 6500 Graphic Design Seminar (grad) -- Lectures, discussions, field trips, and media presentations dealing with contemporary issues of critical discourse in design and the related social dynamic. Seminar content will vary.
ART 5510 Graphic Design Studio (grad) -- Research of various design paradigms will be explored through a rebuilding of pragmatic processes to an end that assists all students to reach an industry standard of research, skills, and exploration process.
ART 4956 BFA Exhibition -- This course provides a comprehensive study of the methods and techniques involved in the process of exhibition design. Through the use of 2D and 3D design techniques, students will plan site-specific details in order to create a cohesive visual narrative that supports the individual subject matter of the work involved.
ART 4954 Graphic Design Practicum -- Preparation for senior presentation and portfolio. Requirement for all studio majors. The goal of this class is to facilitate professional development as a graphic designer. Students in this course will gain professional experience through working with clients, grant writing, and the creation of a personal brand/identity. Upon completion of this course, you will have completed a detailed funding proposal for your thesis project, as well as a resume, website, business card, and letterhead. In addition, you will complete a professional project in collaboration with one of our community partners.
ART 4520 Graphic Design IV -- Emphasis on development/execution/presentation of self-directed project for thesis exhibition. This course provides a framework for the production, critique, and analysis of student self-directed thesis projects. It is the capstone of your studies and relies on the recollection and application of your previous research.
ART 4510 Graphic Design III -- Meaning construction through "personal voice," exploration of experimental image making and advanced typographical design in the context of various applications.
ART 3520 Graphic Design II -- Emphasis on intermediate typography as visual form and communication. Creation of multi-paged formats with consideration of sequence, repetition, flow, graphic and semantic content, and the context of meaning.
ART 2520 Typography -- Introduction to the use of typography as symbolic form. Study of typographic history, nomenclature, and meaning generation through letterform construction, word image, page sequencing, and digital composition.
UC 1900 Learning Community Seminar: Visual Communication/Graphic Design -- The seminar course associated with thematic or discipline-specific learning communities. Topics may include introduction to disciplinary norms, academic expectations of specific colleges and programs and research and creative opportunities at Ohio University.
A faculty position in the College of Fine Arts and the School of Art + Design at Ohio University, teaching undergraduate and graduate design studio and lecture courses across existing curricula in Graphic Design, working on new program development, as well as serving on School, College, and University Committees.

MCOM 2003 Principals of Game Design -- This course examines the principles of game design through exercises and assignments geared toward creating compelling games. Students will learn the game design process through a comprehension of the history of game design, game theory, and project development from initial concept to public launch. Topics include basic terminology and best practices in the fundamentals of art, design, and programming using contemporary game engine software.
MCOM 3043 AR/VR Production --This course is designed to introduce fundamental practices of immersive media production. Students already capable of linear video production or motion graphic design will expand their skills to 360° audio and video capturing, authoring augmented reality experiences, and interactive virtual reality projects.
MCOM 1733 Introduction to Mass Media -- A survey of mass communication including the history and development of newspapers, magazines, web-based media, radio, and television.
ART 3303 Motion Graphics -- This course is an introduction to the fundamental techniques and components of motion design. Students will explore basic concepts of art and design in time. The course integrates design, image, sound, video, and animation.
ART 3923/4923 Digital and Electronic Art I & II -- Courses are an exploration of digital and electronic processes in contemporary art-making. Students are introduced to topics such as accessibility, usability, and interface. This course varies by semester and instructor to cover some of the following depending on term: digital painting, video as an art medium, 3D modeling and printing, digital collage, animation, prototyping techniques, and interactive objects.
ART 2943 Principles of Graphic Design -- This course examines the principles of graphic design through exercises and assignments geared toward experimentation and expression of type, with emphasis on the graphic design process. Topics include basic terminology, principles and fundamentals, comprehension of the visual language, and the history of graphic design. Students will learn to use the Adobe Suite software in preparation of commercial applications in Print-based media. A foundational course for the advanced courses in graphic design.
ART 3943 Graphic Design I & II -- Intermediate courses that focus on the refinement of student’s problem-solving skills in graphic design as a medium of communication. This course varies by semester and instructor to cover some of the following depending on the term: Poster Design and Digital Illustration, Branding and Identity Systems, Data Visualization and Information Design, and Package Design.
ART 2153/3153 Typography I & II -- Courses examine the basics of Typography as a compositional tool. Students explore the architecture of single letterforms, the principles of setting type, page layout, and publication design. Students research and present their findings on the History of Typography. All aspects of Typography are learned through in-class demonstrations and studio work. There is an emphasis on technical problem-solving and aesthetic use of display and type.
MCOM 4233 Documentary Production -- Develop a documentary form (using photography, audio recording or video production) for the purpose of publication or portfolio.
ART 4741/4841 Professional Practice I & II -- Students work on developing methodologies associated with professional practice including preparation of resumes or Curriculum Vita, documentation of their works, development of a web page, and general studio practices.
ART 4971 Senior Exhibit -- This senior exhibition is a cumulative statement of the students’ preparation to proceed on an art career beyond the baccalaureate degree.
ART 1213 Two-Dimensional Design -- Study includes the history and theory of two-dimensional design, the principles of design organization, and the application of plastic elements to solve design problems.
ART 2233 Art in Life -- Study of significant ideas of Western cultures emphasizing American and European cultures as manifested in visual art and architecture from prehistoric times to present.
